GEICO (The Government Employees Insurance Company) is an American auto insurance company. GEICO provides coverage to more than 10 million motor cars, trucks and other motor vehicles. It is also owned by more than 8 million policy holders. GEICO is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. GEICO has had many successful advertising campaigns over the years including commercials featuring a CGI lizard gecko, a caveman spoof that was later turned into a 30 minute television comedy as well as recent advertising campaigns featuring celebrities such as Little Richard, Peter Frampton and Joan Rivers just to name a few. These are all good campaigns but our favorite includes the Good News/Bad News campaign in which people describe having good news because of switching to GEICO at the expense of other people. The joke in the ad is that the news of GEICO is usually irrelevant because it has no immediate benefit or use to the other person being given the news. For example, a struggling relief pitcher in baseball is being given the boot by his manager. The manager tells him that he has bad news/good news. The pitcher asks what the bad news is first and the manager replies by ordering the pitcher out of the game for his terrible performance. The pitcher then asks what the good news is and the manager replies by saying that he just saved a bunch of money on his car insurance by switching to GEICO. Here is the quote in its entirety…

“I have good news…I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO.” – The Government Employees Insurance Company
