E3 2013 is here and this will be the 19th Expo for the computer and video game industry. All of the buzz this year was on the hype of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and to try and find out as much juicy details as we could on both consoles. Both companies announced the price of their console and the upcoming launch titles that gamers will get a chance to play upon release. Fans of both consoles were left happy but had many questions unanswered about each console such as the possible elimination of the used video game market and Microsoft’s omission that you might need to have the console connected to the internet at all times. Nintendo opted out of a traditional press conference but did make sporadic appearances on the main floor to show off new first party software titles.

As is always the case…Here’s a look at some of the more original and unique game properties that we saw at this year’s event.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

-Nintendo didn’t have much to announce at this year’s E3 so a lot of their focus went into showing off new first party titles such as Super Smash Bros. Wii U. This game will be cross-compatible with the same version on the Nintendo 3DS. The pace of battles will be in between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The game will not make use of the touch screen controls that both systems support during game play. Twenty one characters have been confirmed for the game and include new characters such as Mega Man and the Make Wii Fit Trainer. Some of the stages announced for the game will include a stage based on the Super Mario Galaxy series and a stage based on the Kid Icarus series with Palutena’s statue.

Destiny

-The Master Chefs at Bungie are cooking up another epic sci-fi shooter and that shooter’s name is ‘Destiny’. The game’s style has been described as an always-online first-person shooter that will incorporate massively multiplayer online game elements. Much of the action will take place in an open world setting where outcomes aren’t predetermined by the developer. This means that certain outcomes can change on the fly in the game and create a whole new experience that the developers didn’t envision while making the game. Destiny is set seven hundred years into the future in a post-apocalyptic setting and will center around the journey of the Guardians, the last defenders of humanity, set to protect Earth’s last city. In addition, there will be social networking events planned with the game but so far no formal announcement has been made about how these events will tie-in with the game. The game will no longer be an Xbox exclusive and will be available on both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in Fall 2014.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

-This new title is combining a squad-based shooter with heavy RPG elements and a persistent open-world. It’s being developed by Ubisoft Massive under the Tom Clancy brand for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. In the game, a disease that spreads on Black Friday causes the United States to collapse in five days. The gamer is part of a group called ‘Strategic Homeland Division’ which was established to combat the threat and do whatever it takes to save what remains. This is one of the few games we saw at E3 that truly demonstrates the potential of including a tablet in the mix by allowing others gamers to aid someone in-game by providing air support with the use of a tablet device. The only worry we see with the game is the increased dependability on other gamers that you must interact with in order to complete missions. This can be helpful if you have mature gamers but many will try and disrupt your game play and troll the mission and make for an awkward experience.

Titanfall

-Titanfall is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts as an exclusive for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game is online multiplayer-only, but injects single-player elements such as plot, character chatter, and non-player characters into its matches. Players will be using lots of mechs in the game and this will be far different compared to most modern military shooters that we’ve seen in recent memory. The game has won multiple awards by critics and multiple ‘Best in Show’ awards. Many critics are calling this game the first ‘Killer App’ that will help to increase Xbox One sales once the game is released sometime in 2014. The game uses Microsoft’s cloud computing services to offload non-player activity to servers and optimize the home computer for graphical performance. A collector’s edition is slated to include a Titan statue set in a LED-lit diorama, an art book, and a poster.

Knack

-Knack is a platform beat ’em up video game published by Sony Computer Entertainment and developed by Japan Studio in cooperation with game director Mark Cerny for the PlayStation 4 video game console, for which it is a launch title. The game is intentionally designed to be simple and accessible and is a throwback to more traditional platform games. The main character in Knack is a strange, hard-to-describe creature. Knack grows and shrinks in size based upon items he finds called Relics. The larger Knack gets, the more powerful he becomes and the more damage he can withstand. The game’s graphics don’t look next-gen but have strong particle effects and have a CGI feel to them and you get the feeling that you’re playing an animated movie inside a video game.

Dying Light

-Dying Light is an upcoming first-person survival horror video game developed by Techland to be released on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. Dying light is a zombie-apocalypse open world game where players must survive and kill zombies and use the game’s daylight/night mechanics to their advantage in order to avoid becoming a zombie’s next meal. The game allows weapon crafting and has free running mechanics. During the day, the player has to go out and scavenge for supplies or help random survivors. During the day, zombies are slower and pose less of a threat. However, night zombies are more powerful and gain speed and you must set traps or obstacles to avoid a zombie if you unfortunately get noticed by one. The game is to be released sometime in Spring 2014.

Puppeteer

-Puppeteer is a brand new franchise developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 by SCE JAPAN Studio. It’s playable in both traditional 2D and in 3D. Puppeteer is a side-scrolling platformer. The main character is named Kutaro, who has been turned into a puppet and had his head torn off. Kutaro must find various types of heads to replace his own that come with their own unique abilities and aid the gamer in killing enemies . Kutaro is armed with a pair of magical scissors. The scissors serve as a weapon but they can also be used strategically to cut up items and take Kutaro to otherwise inaccessible areas. The game is presented as a puppet show in front of an audience who can be heard cheering and laughing when impressive actions take place on-stage. With all of the buzz being on next-gen games, we hope that gamers don’t forget about this game and the game doesn’t get abandoned by those whom have decided to put their old PS3s in their closet for safe storage.

Murdered: Soul Suspect

-Murdered: Soul Suspect is an upcoming action-adventure game published by Square Enix. The game is centered on Detective Ronan O’Connor who uses his ghostly powers to solve his own murder while combating demonic creatures at the same time. Gameplay concepts involve walking through walls, creeping up on demons, solving puzzles and possessing the living. Airtight games posted a teaser trailer of the game on the game’s official YouTube account. The game will be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It has been teased to be targeted for 2014.

Killer Instinct

-Killer Instinct is a fighting game developed by Double Helix Games. The game will be released exclusively as a launch game for the Xbox One. A signature feature of Killer Instinct, the Ultra Combo and Combo Breakers, is included. The game features the ability to unlock and use classic Killer Instinct music and costumes in place of their updated counterparts. In addition, the game will use Kinect’s facial recognition software to save players’ personalized game settings. The game will feature old characters from previous Killer Instinct games such as Jago, Glacius and Thunder but will also have a few new characters such as Sadira and Shadow Jago. Additional characters are planned to be included as part of a ‘second season’ of downloadable content. The game will launch as a free game demo that includes all available game modes but only one playable character, Jago, with the ability to purchase additional fighters individually.

As is always the case, we can’t include every game viewed at E3 on this list. We always try to choose games that are unique to viewers or have some type of hype surrounding them at the event. We’re sure that there will be many huge sequels on the horizon for both next generation systems once they’re launched in late 2013. It’s a great time to be a video game fan with two brand new video game consoles about to make their debut in the marketplace. Here’s a sample of some great games we didn’t mention that we’re sure will make an impact for these systems in 2014.
