Fresh food is delicious. We can’t deny the benefits of fresh meat, fruits or vegetables. However, we’re a busy generation that loves to shove frozen junk out of a box and shove it into a warm pot, oven or microwave. They’re many frozen foods out on the market that will give you the equivalent of a home cooked meal. We prefer frozen foods that are quick to make, easy to eat (and a bonus if no utensils are involved) and are just as enjoyable to eat compared to a fresh hot meal. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite frozen foods in your freezer aisle at the local grocery store.

Taquitos

-A taquito is a Mexican food dish most often consisting of a small rolled-up tortilla and some type of filling, including beef, cheese or chicken. We like these because you have the choice of either nuking them in the microwave or waiting longer for a crisp fried texture if you put them in the oven. They go great with ranch dip, salsa or sour cream. We’re happy to announce that the USA government requires all taquito manufacturers to sell taquitos that contain at least 15% meat. So, if you’re worried about your meat intake or simply worried about what’s inside these things – we’re happy to announce that at least you’re getting some form of meat inside these puppies at all times.

White Castle Frozen Burgers

-We don’t need to produce a film about trying to locate the nearest White Castle fast food franchise when we can simply pick up a few of their sliders in the frozen foods aisle of our local grocery store. These burgers only require a warm napkin to wrap around them and can be put in the microwave for two minutes. The bun tastes a bit soggy but the meat is nice ans steamed and comes topped with caramelized onions. They come packaged as two in a pair but we can’t comment on how well your stomach will adjust to them after eating a few if you get the late night munchies.

Trader Joe’s Macaroni & Cheese

-We have tried many microwavable mac & cheese dinners over the years. There’s many things that can go wrong such as burnt cheese, sticky noodles or under cooked noodles that hurt when you chew them. One of our favorite mac & cheese dishes comes from the ‘Trader Joe’s’ chain of grocery stores. We like the product because it uses white cheddar (compared to the standard yellow cheddar), tastes like real cheese (as opposed to the plastic taste of some products) and their cheese is more gooier compared to their competitors. Also, TJ’s mac and cheese has the perfect cheese/noodle ratio.

TGI Friday’s Mozarella Sticks

-We like these mozza sticks because they taste pretty darn similar to the one’s that you get at the restaurant chain which is a compliment since most restaurant chain frozen foods taste nothing like the real deal. These are perfectly coated, the cheese tastes like real cheese and the marinara sauce is pretty good too. These are rectangular in shape compared to most which are round and the cheese comes out stringy while others just ooze out and freeze up shortly after they’re pulled from the oven.

Tater Tots

-Tater Tots are a side dish made from deep-fried, grated potatoes. They are widely distributed by McCain in Canada and Ore-Ida in the USA. Americans consume approximately 70 million pounds of tater tots per year. We like these compared to French fried potatoes because they’re easy to pop in your mouth and pack more potato inside each bite compare to some fries which are thin and mushy. The crisping tray does a good job at making them crispy.

Mrs. T’s Potato & Cheddar Pierogies

-Mrs. T’s Pierogies is the leading mass market brand of pierogies in the United States from Ateeco Inc. Over 13 million Pierogies in 14 varieties leave Ateeco’s kitchens every week. One of the company’s most popular promotions is the Great Pierogi Race at home games of the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball. We love the idea of eating two starches at once. These Eastern European dumplings can be microwaved, boiled or thrown in a skillet and fried with some onions and butter. Although the potatoes and cheese are probably of the potato flake and powder method, they still taste great with some sour cream or apple sauce on the side.

Totino’s Pizza Rolls

-We can think of no better combination of egg roll wrappers stuffed with pizza toppings. These are best if fried in oil or put in an oven. You can microwave them but they will be extra chewy and not as crisp if done the other two methods. Inside is a mish mash of tomato filling, spices and cheese. They have a better crust than most pizza chains, are dirt cheap and only take 15 minutes or less to make. We recommend that you wait for these to cool down for a few minutes as biting into one too early can cause the filling to explode out of its shell and burn your outer lip. The key to maximizing their enjoyability is timing. Don’t let them go so long they all explode and don’t eat them right away or else the flavor will be hidden by the heat. Some might call it lard on cardboard but we call them delicious.

Pinty’s Authentic Pub & Grill Frozen Chicken Wings

-You can usually find these bad boys in the freezer section of your local Canadian Costco (Sorry USA readers but you’re out of luck). They are big, moist and have a much better flavor than other frozen wings I have tried. The pub style breading makes these delicious but loaded with fat compared to most frozen chicken wings. You need to bake these since it’s hard to deep fry pre-sauced wings. They’re a little on the expensive side but their meat is real and not processed and don’t taste like rubber compared to most wing competitors.

Dunn’s Famous Smoked Meat Pouches

-This is another frozen item that’s only available to Canadian customers primarily in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec (Montreal being the smoked meat capital of the world). You can find the product at any Costco warehouse in those locations. Smoked meat is a type of kosher-style deli meat product made by salting and curing beef brisket with spices. Montreal smoked meat is made with brisket, while pastrami is more commonly made with the navel/plate cut. The company now sells a frozen version of their landmark food in pouches that can be boiled in water, steamed or put in the microwave for a few minutes. You can eat the meat by itself or make a sandwich with it by putting it on two slabs of rye bread and add some mustard for some extra zing. This product goes great with a cherry cola to wash it all down.

That’s our list of great frozen foods. If you think that you’ve got a great selection to add to our list; let us know in the comment section. We’ll try and update this article with another list of great frozen foods once we get our hands on some new delicious products to be marketed in our local freezer aisle. Thanks for reading.
