Howler is an indie rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gatesmith and Petrek helped to form the band after a chance encounter at a Planned Parenthood clinic where they met each other and found out that they had the same taste in music. Howler released its first EP, ‘This One’s Different’, in the United States in February 14, 2011. London-based record label Rough Trade Records signed the band to a record deal in the Summer of 2011. Howler’s debut album, ‘America Give Up’, was released in January 2012. NME publication in the UK has named Howler their #3 Best New Band of 2011 and Complex magazine has Howler in their top 20 to watch list for 2012. The band will be playing Reading & Leeds Festivals in August 2012 and are hoping to have a second album out sometime in 2013.

In the last 2-3 years, tablet devices have made a dent in the once traditional laptop and PC markets. Of course, the Ipad is the clear favorite among most hipsters but we decided to take a look at another device that has been gaining lots of momentum and that’s the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Highs:
-Great price
-Solid build quality
-Easy access to lots of media
-One free book a month

Lows:
-Occasionally clumsy interface
-Low internal storage capacity
-No 3G or bluetooth
-Marginal battery life

The Kindle Fire is the first tablet device by Amazon to be in colour. It’s 7.5 x 4.7 x .47 inches in size and only features a power button and audio output for headphones on the side. This means that any tinkering will need to be done through the tablet’s software functions. Inside, you’ll find a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP processor paired with 512MB of RAM and a mere 8GB of storage. We wish that there was more storage space so that we could load more multimedia content but the device is priced cheaper to compensate for the lack of storage space. In the future, we hope they release another version with increased storage space for those that like to watch more movies/audio on the device compared to reading with it. The tablet supports 802.11b/g/n but doesn’t have 3G or bluetooth. We’ll forgive them for leaving out bluetooth but 3G speeds are a must in today’s workplace. Also, the Kindle’s battery life can barely reach 8 hrs. This isn’t too much of a concern as 8hrs. is still a long duration but it’s low when you compare it to most other tablets that can go beyond 8hrs. with some even reaching 10 hrs. in battery life.

Lana was born in Sudbury, Ontario. Lana began her career doing commercials. She did commercials for Hakim Optical which is a sunglasses store and Muchmusic. At the age of 18, she posed for Playboy magazine and was nominated for model of the year. She would later pose for several fitness magazines including Inside Fitness, Toro, and American Curves. Lana would venture out and do television gigs as she has been the host of ‘Get Out Canada!’ on the HDNet television network for several years and also was a lead actor in ‘Doing Costa Rica’. Lana would go on to star in the late night comedic-Sexy Drama TV Series ‘Lingerie’ on Cinemax. Lana is not taking her recent success at acting as a fluke as she has hired private acting coaches to help her improve on her acting skills and hopes to get more acting roles in the future. In addition, Lana has a workout video with several other models that is in the works and will be released at some point in 2011.

Frank Ocean, is an American singer-songwriter from New Orleans, Louisiana. Frank Ocean began his career with the producer duo The MIDI Mafia. Since 2009, he’s been a part of the hip-hop collective known as ‘Odd Future’ which also features popular hip-hop artist/producer Tyler the Creator. He has written several songs for such artists as Justin Bieber, John Legend, Brandy and Beyonce Knowles. On February 18, 2011, Ocean released his first mixtape, ‘Nostalgia, Ultra’, to critical acclaim. The single ‘Novacane’ was released to iTunes on May 31, 2011, by his music label Def Jam records. In the summer of 2011, Ocean worked on the Kanye West and Jay-Z collaborative album ‘Watch the Throne’. Def Jam records is set to release his debut album in Spring 2012. Ocean’s first lead single, ‘Thinkin’ Bout You’, will be released to retailers on April 10, 2012. Ocean is set to go on tour as the opening act for the band ‘Coldplay’ in July-August 2012.

Simon Ridley and Shane Parsons are two musicians hailing from Brisbane,Australia. They infamously began their musical career by playing loudly at parties and enjoying being rock stars in a country that often finds rock stars ‘cheesy’. The thrash rock band have supported the Foo Fighters on a recent Australian tour and toured Britain with the band ‘Cerebral Ballzy’. Also, the band has played three shows at the SXSW festival in 2011 and followed that up with another six performances at the festival in 2012 which featured a guest appearance by musician Andrew W.K. Their first single ‘Dollar Chills’ is taken from the band’s debut record ‘Bloodstreams’ which is coming out in the US on May 8th.
