Flight of the Conchords is a television series from HBO about two struggling band mates from New Zealand who are trying to become famous rock stars in New York City. The show stars the real life comedy duo of Jermaine Clement and Bret Mckenzie who are portrayed on the show as taking their music seriously but in real life are often doing parodies of popular songs. Jermaine or Bret will break into song periodically throughout each episode. The songs that are portrayed are usually story driven and involve some type of parody of an event that has occurred during each episode.

Bret and Jemaine are often depicted as being clumsy and inexperienced with women. They will usually compete with each other over who is more of a lady’s man but in reality neither of them are very popular with women. This leads us to this month’s quote where Jermaine explains how many women he’s been with back in New Zealand.

Jemaine: Man, back in New Zealand I was getting it on with lots of chicks.

Bret: Who?

Jemaine: Well, ah, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Claire Fitzpatrick… the list goes on.

Bret: That was all of them.

Jemaine: Well, triple figures.

Bret: No that’s not triple figures. That’s three.

Football season is usually just getting ready to heat up in October so we thought we’d do a football quote for this month. Herman Edwards is the head coach of the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. He also played the position of cornerback for eight seasons (1979-1986) with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons. Prior to his coaching career, Edwards was known best as the player who recovered a fumble by Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik on a play that has been dubbed by some as “The Miracle at the Meadowlands.” After his football career ended, he was hired as a defensive assistant for San Jose University. He would then go on to become an NFL Scout and defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs under the watchful eye of Marty Schottenheimer.Edwards would later join fellow head coach and friend Tony Dungy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Edwards finally got his big break when he was signed to coach the New York Jets despite never previously being either a coach or coordinator for another team. He has been the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs since 2006. Edwards is known for his motivational speeches which the media has termed “Herminisms”. Edwards’ popularity among motivational speaking has even led to the publication of his own book of quotes entitled “Leadership Lessons”. One of his more popular quotes is based off a speech he gave while coach of the New York Jets about his team’s ability to win following a week 7 loss that left the team with a 2-5 record. Here is what Edwards said:

“This is what’s great about sports. This is what the greatest thing about sports is. You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don’t play it to just play it. That’s the great thing about sports: you play to win, and I don’t care if you don’t have any wins. You go play to win. When you start tellin’ me it doesn’t matter, then retire. Get out! ‘Cause it matters.” – Herman Edwards

Here’s King arguing with the media over something that he feels was misinterpreted.

“I can’t believe that having said what I said was interpreted as having been what I said when I said it, because I said it where I said it, when I said it, and who I said it to.” – Don King

Harry Houdini was a magician, escape artist and stunt performer. He’s the one magician that every rookie magician wants to imitate. His career started off slow but soon his escape acts would catch the world’s attention. He would go on to perform such great escape acts like freeing himself from jails, handcuffs, chains, ropes, and straitjackets, often while hanging from a rope in plain sight of street audiences. His acts would often involve a large degree of danger or even death and would cause large audiences to gather whenever he performed one of his acts. He also spent a large amount of his time debunking mediums or psychics and calling them out as frauds. He was a believer in science and not spirituality and believed that the mind was the most powerful asset of a human being. Here is one of his better quotes discussing the human mind.

“What the eye see and the ears hear, the mind believes.” – Harry Houdini
